Shimano Alfine gear hub

Everything you need to know about your gear hub bike

Adjusting the gear hub

The cable of Alfine transmissions can stretch and loosen over time. If you want to adjust it or check it, the two small yellow markings on the hub show its position. Its use is simple. In all cases, the shifter must be set to the middle position. In this step, the two small yellow markings next to the pulley must coincide. If it does not coincide, you can tighten and loosen the tension of the cable with small screws at the shift lever. This can often be the cause of misshifting, stuttering and most problems, so it's worth checking every now and then.

    • 4th gear for an 8-speed gear hub
    • 6th gear for an 11-speed gear hub

Position of the rear axle

The rear wheel axle must lie exactly in the dropout of the frame, otherwise the shifting will be bad, which can lead to damage to the hub.

Correct shifting process

In case of shifting with a gear hub, you must definitely shift while running freely. It can also be done while moving the pedals, but you have to make sure that there is no torque on the pedal. So, like the clutch in cars. If you turn the pedal gently, but not so much that you move the bike with it, then it’s ok to shift.

Removing the rear wheel

If you want to remove the rear wheel, you must first unhook the Alfine transmission cable and then loosen the axle nuts and remove the wheel. Here you can find a document showing the replacement of the bearing. In this document, there are diagrams showing how to unhook and reattach the Alfine hub shift cable. (X)

Oil change

If your bicycle is equipped with a Shimano Alfine 11s gear hub, it is important to know that it is an oil-lubricated system. A service check is recommended every 1 year or every 5,000 km.
