Discover Gates belt drive systems

About us in brief:
In 2013, we started as Massive Bikes. At that time, we installed Gates Carbon belt drive systems and hub derailleurs in chain-driven production bicycles. Since then, we have been selling our own belt-driven bicycles and the corresponding accessories and parts under the name Booda Bike. You can find our selection of belt-driven bicycles on our website.

Gates Carbon Drive system versus chain drive:
Chain drive is one of the oldest and most common drive systems in the world of bicycles. Racers still use it today, because it is more efficient than belt drive, despite the very frequent cleaning, maintenance, and lubrication. The advantage of Gates belt drive is apparent to everyday cyclists. Its low maintenance and "undemanding" nature make it an ideal solution for those who do not like to constantly service and monitor their bike and want a long-lasting system (the CDX belt lasts about 50,000 km).

Advantages of the Gates belt drive:
Does not require lubrication (for chain drives, this is usually chain oil)
Clean - Does not get your feet dirty
Quiet - You can hardly hear its humming, there is no vibrating/rattling noise
Low maintenance - does not require anything more than minor attention
Long life - Up to 50,000 km
Lightweight - Carbon - polymer alloy makes it lighter than a metal chain
Just adjust and tension it once and it will never fall off again
Disadvantages of the Gates belt drive
Requires a special frame that can accommodate the belt at the rear fork and tension the belt
If the frame cannot tension the belt, then must be tensioned with an eccentric (Booda Bike bicycles are also designed to be like this)
You have to pay attention to the belt line when assembling (While the chain can handle minor skew, the Gates belt is sensitive to the belt line due to the running of the ribs. This needs to be adjusted once and then it's good)
More expensive than the chain
Types of Gates Carbon Drive belt drive bicycle systems:
Gates belt drive system (CDX)
The Gates CDX ™ line of belt drives performs even in the toughest conditions. Rooted in technology originally designed for dragsters, the CDX series brings similar strength, reliability and durability to bicycles as in car racing. Less weight. More performance. More fun.

The CDX belt is most easily recognized by its ribbed back. It has a high tensile strength synthetic polyurethane structure with a carbon fiber cord insert, which makes it very durable and does not stretch. It has a nylon tread and a curved tooth profile optimized for bicycles.

The Gates drive system has a forged alloy axle and a lightweight aluminum CDX crank. The combination of quality components guarantees the expected performance. The rear pulleys are made of stainless steel, making them extremely durable. The belt drive bicycle system is easy to assemble.

We recommend it for cyclists who ride their bike regularly and want to make their bike's drive system low-maintenance. It offers a slightly different, smoother riding experience compared to a chain.

The Gates CDX belt should be replaced after approx. 50,000 km. This may vary depending on the type of use. This only applies to the belt, the other parts are not necessarily due for replacement at this time.

Gates Belt Drive System (CDN)
Designed for casual urban cyclists, the Gates Carbon Drive ™ CDN ™ is for those who like to ride in jeans or a skirt commuting. Similar drawn carbon fiber technology to Gates' premium CDX system. The CDN product line offers an entry-level option for recreational cycling.

The CDN belt is most easily recognized by its smooth lugs. It has a high-tensile, engineered polyurethane construction with a carbon fiber cord insert, making it very durable and resistant to stretching. It has a nylon tread and a curved tooth profile optimized for bicycles. It wears slightly faster than the CDX belt.

The Gates CDN drive system features a forged alloy square shaft and a lightweight aluminum crank. The CDN front pulleys are made of reinforced composite polymer. The system is compatible with the CDX rear pulleys, which are made of stainless steel, making them extremely durable. The system is easy to assemble.

We recommend it mainly for casual urban cyclists who want to ride comfortably and make their bike low-maintenance. Compared to a chain provides a slightly different, smoother riding experience.

The belt should be replaced after approx. 20,000 km. This may vary depending on the type of use. This only applies to the belt, the other parts are not necessarily due for replacement at this time.
