Rohloff E-14 Solo: Electronic Shifting for Any Rohloff Bike — No E-Bike Required

In short: the Rohloff E-14 Solo is an electronic shifting system for the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 that needs no e-bike, no app, no cloud and no registration. It retrofits to any Rohloff hub built in the last ~30 years, shifts in about 180 ms, and runs for 20,000+ shifts — roughly 1,000–2,000 km — on a single charge. Rohloff will supply it to bike manufacturers from 2026, with aftermarket retrofit kits arriving from Q1 2027. It won a Eurobike Gold Award 2026. At Booda Bike we built a similar power-bank-based system before the official version existed, so we know first-hand what it brings on the road.

The essentials at a glance

Rohloff E-14 Solo electric shifting for bikes

What is the Rohloff E-14 Solo?

The Rohloff E-14 Solo is the electronic shifting system for the legendary SPEEDHUB 500/14 hub. The key difference from the earlier E-14: this version is built for regular bikes, not e-bikes. Until now, electronic Rohloff shifting only existed for Bosch mid-drive pedelecs; the Solo brings that technology to gravel, touring, commuter and cargo bikes.

The system is deliberately simple: no app, no cloud, no account. Essentially just buttons, a battery and a shift actuator — press once and it shifts, hold the button and it steps through several gears in threes.

Not the first attempt — but the cleanest one

Rohloff's twist-grip shifter has always divided riders: great once you're used to it, but slippery in the wet, hard on tired hands, and never elegant on drop bars. Over the years a few aftermarket fixes emerged — Gebla Rohbox and Cinqshifters convert the twist grip to cable-actuated trigger or brake-lever shifting, and SternShift went electronic first, even running off a dynamo hub so it never needs charging. All of them work, but none matches the ergonomics and feel of a purpose-built shifter.

The E-14 Solo is Rohloff's own answer — following the same electronic-shifting trend that Pinion kicked off a few years back with its own gearbox drivetrain. Rohloff's version keeps the classic hub but finally gives it a dedicated, factory-designed electronic control.

Rohloff E14 Solo Electric Shifting

A huge existing base: built to retrofit

The Solo's biggest advantage is compatibility: it's designed to electronically retrofit every SPEEDHUB 500/14 Rohloff has ever produced, across hub widths from 135 to 197 mm, and it works fine alongside a Gates Carbon Drive belt. Because the electronic controls sit outside the hub shell itself, upgrading an existing bike doesn't mean replacing the hub — you swap the mechanical twist-grip actuation for the E-14 electronic module, add the battery and connecting cable, and the hub you already trust now shifts electronically.

Shifting performance and shifting under load

Shifts complete in about 180 ms — fast enough to feel instantaneous, and precise whether you're changing one gear or stepping through several. That said, like every Rohloff Speedhub, the E-14 Solo can't shift while you're putting full power through the pedals; you still need to briefly ease off, exactly as with the mechanical version. Because the shift itself takes such a short moment, that pause is barely noticeable in practice.

Battery, charging and weatherproofing

A single charge is good for 20,000+ shifts, working out to roughly 1,000–2,000 km depending on terrain, cadence and how often you shift. Charging is simple: a standard USB-C charger via an in-line port positioned near the stem — a setup that will feel familiar if you've charged a Shimano Di2 groupset before.

On OEM bikes the battery and wiring run fully integrated inside the frame; on retrofit installs, the battery mounts externally, much like a mini-pump under a bottle cage. The system is built to handle rain and splashes, but it isn't meant to be submerged, and Rohloff specifically advises against pressure washers, which can damage the electronics.

Why is this a big deal? The end of the twist shifter

Rohloff has always been unbeatable for durability and low maintenance (especially with a Gates belt drive), but the twist shifter put many riders off — particularly on drop bars, where mounting it cleanly was never elegant. The Solo fixes exactly that:

  • clean, ergonomic cockpit, drop bars included (TRP Hywire brifter).
  • Fast, precise shifts, one gear or several in sequence.
  • Multishift: hold the button to jump several gears in 3-gear steps.

You keep everything the hub is famous for: 14 gears, a wide 526% gear range with even steps (ideal for gravel), running sealed in an oil bath, and — importantly — adjustment-free.

Maintenance: nearly maintenance-free, but honest about it

No drivetrain is truly 100% maintenance-free, and Rohloff doesn't pretend otherwise. In practice the hub needs an oil change once a year or every 5,000 km, whichever comes first. It's a quick job — about 15–20 minutes with a simple kit (two oils and a syringe), easily done at home. As Rohloff puts it: if you can bake a cake, you can do this oil change.

Durability

Rohloff points to hubs with nearly 500,000 km on them whose internal gearing still shows no measurable wear. Paired with the Solo's electronic actuation, you get fast, precise shifts on a drivetrain built to outlast the bike around it.

Our story: we built it before the official version existed

This one's personal for us. When there was no official, non-e-bike solution, we at Booda Bike built our own power-bank-based system from Rohloff's earlier, e-bike-oriented E-14. That became our early-bird model — see the walkthrough video and the product page.

So we're not speaking from theory: we know first-hand how an electronically shifting Rohloff behaves day to day. Now that Rohloff has released the official, factory-warrantied Solo, it's even easier — the warranty and support come straight from the manufacturer.

Bought an early-bird bike from us? Here's how to move to the Solo

If you bought an early-bird Rohloff E-14 electronic-shifting bike from us, good news: the technology you believed in is now available in factory-warrantied form — and Rohloff's own retrofit kits are set to arrive from Q1 2027, right around when we begin shipping our own Solo models.

  • For long-term, supported operation, it's worth switching to the Rohloff Solo.
  • We provide a step-by-step conversion guide to walk you through it.

Alpine Solo and Pulse Solo: Soon available for pre-order

We've built two of our own models around the Solo, running the Rohloff Solo system from the factory:

  • Alpine E-14 Solo (drop bar) — Coming soon!
  • Pulse E-14 Solo (flat/straight bar) — Coming soon!

Both are available for pre-order very soon. We'll begin shipping from January 2027, but final delivery may slip by 2–3 months, since availability of the system isn't fully locked in yet — this lines up with Rohloff's own Q1 2027 retrofit timeline. We'll update pre-order customers as soon as we have a firm date.

Lighting: dynamo only for now

One thing to note when configuring: our Solo-equipped bikes currently ship with a dynamo light. A solution that would power the light from the shifting battery doesn't exist yet. So if you want lights, we currently do it with a dynamo

Who is it for?

The Rohloff E-14 Solo suits riders who:

  • love the reliability and low maintenance of the Rohloff hub (e.g. with a Gates belt),
  • but want clean, fast, electronic shifting instead of a twist grip — including on drop bars,
  • and need a durable drivetrain for gravel, touring, commuting or cargo use.

How much does it cost?

Rohloff has said the retrofit kit for owners who already have a Rohloff hub will run around €1,000. As with most electronic drivetrains, it's likely to be more affordable bundled into a complete bike than bought as a standalone retrofit kit.
