The Rohloff Cable box EX – plastic (8212PA, ExBox) is the plastic cable box for the external gear mech of the SPEEDHUB 500/14 – the current replacement for the earlier aluminium version, for riders who need to renew a cracked or worn cable box.

Why replace the cable box?

  • Made for the external gear mech. The cable box takes both shift cables straight from the twist shifter to the hub – all disc brake (DB) versions of the SPEEDHUB 500/14 use this system.
  • Cable adjusters on board. Both shift cables are tensioned right at the box, so you can set the recommended free play at the shifter without extra in-line adjusters.
  • Quick to swap. The cable box comes off the external transfer box on its own, so you change only the damaged part, not the whole gear mech.
  • Current Rohloff version. The plastic ExBox replaces the earlier aluminium cable box.

When do you need it?

A fall on the drive side, a crash in a bike rack or simply years of use can crack or wear the cable box. A fresh ExBox restores clean, precise shifting without replacing the transfer box or the hub cables.

Who is it for?

  • SPEEDHUB riders with a damaged cable box. Restore precise shifting after a fall or rack damage.
  • Tourers far from a dealer. A small, light spare that gets a disc brake SPEEDHUB shifting again.
  • Workshops. The genuine Rohloff replacement for the aluminium cable box.

Frequently asked questions

Does it fit my SPEEDHUB?

It fits SPEEDHUB 500/14 hubs with the external gear mech, which all disc brake (DB) versions use. Hubs with the internal gear mech use a different cable system. Send us your hub serial number or a photo if you are unsure.

Do I need to readjust the cables after fitting it?

Yes. Set the cable tension so that there is about 2 mm of free play at the twist shifter, then check that all 14 gears can be selected.

Can I replace an aluminium cable box with this one?

Yes. The plastic ExBox is the current replacement for the aluminium version.
