The Rohloff Splined Carrier Standard Lock (8540L) is the splined sprocket adapter with lock ring that a SPEEDHUB 500/14 needs to run a splined Gates Carbon Drive belt sprocket – the base of every Rohloff belt drive.

Why the Lock carrier?

  • Lock ring instead of snap ring. The Gates sprocket is clamped with a lock ring – Rohloff requires the Lock carrier for Carbon Drive sprockets.
  • Belt line on spec. 55 mm (±1 mm) on 135/142 mm hubs, 52 mm (±1 mm) on 148 mm Boost and 73 mm (±1 mm) on 170–197 mm hubs.
  • Fits every SPEEDHUB. Every SPEEDHUB 500/14 can be upgraded to the splined carrier system.
  • Clean and quiet. Belt drive plus SPEEDHUB: no chain oil, no derailleur – the low-maintenance drivetrain many BoodaBike customers ride.

Converting from chain to belt

To switch a SPEEDHUB from chain to Gates belt you need this carrier, a splined Gates rear sprocket, a matching front sprocket and belt – and a frame that can be opened for the belt.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use Rohloff steel chain sprockets on the Lock carrier?

The Lock carrier is specified by Rohloff for splined Gates Carbon Drive sprockets. For chain sprockets use the standard 8540 or slim 8540S carrier.

Do I need special tools?

Yes: a sprocket remover matching your hub spacing (8501, 8508 or 8509), a chain whip and a 24 mm tool. Our Budapest workshop can fit it for you.

Which belt sprocket sizes are available?

Gates offers several splined rear sprocket sizes for Rohloff. Ask us – we stock Gates Carbon Drive parts and can calculate the gearing.
