The Gates Carbon Drive CDX Front Sprocket – Pinion SL (Super Light) is the lightweight Pinion sprocket: black 6061 aluminium that mounts directly on Pinion P- and C-line gearboxes and saves weight over the standard steel sprocket. It is the one to choose when weight matters most – and the standard Pinion sprocket is the one to choose when durability does.

Why choose the Pinion SL sprocket?

  • Extra light. Made of 6061 aluminium, Gates highlights its decisive weight advantage.
  • Direct mount. Fits Pinion P- and C-line gearboxes and mounts directly on the gearbox.
  • CDX belt line. Part of the CDX line, the strongest Gates belt line.
  • Black. A black finish for a clean, dark Pinion drivetrain.

SL means Super Light – not strongest

SL stands for Super Light. The SL sprocket is made of 6061 aluminium to save weight, while the standard CDX Pinion sprocket is made of aerospace stainless steel. If you want the lightest drivetrain, choose the SL; if you want the toughest, choose the standard steel Pinion sprocket.

Which Pinion sprocket is right for you?

Heavy loads, hard mountain riding and long adventure tours reward the stainless steel Pinion sprocket. Riders who count every gram, or build a light bike with a Pinion gearbox, choose the SL. Both belong to the CDX line, so use them with a CDX belt for the complete CDX setup.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Pinion SL the strongest Pinion sprocket?

No. The SL (Super Light) is made of aluminium to save weight. The standard CDX Pinion sprocket is made of aerospace stainless steel and is the more durable choice. Pick the SL for lightness and the standard sprocket for durability.

Which Pinion gearbox does it fit?

Gates lists the Pinion SL for the Pinion P- and C-line gearboxes. Tell us your Pinion model and we will confirm the fit and the right tooth count.

What do CDX, CDC and CDN mean?

They are Gates’ three belt-drive lines for bicycles: CDX (top of the range), CDC (mid-range) and CDN (entry level). Gates rates CDX for hub motors and mid-drive e-bike motors up to 120 Nm, CDC for mid-drive motors up to 75 Nm, and CDN for hub-motor e-bikes and casual riding.

When should I replace a sprocket?

Check your sprockets from time to time. Worn teeth cause noise, tooth jump and faster wear on the belt, so replace the sprocket when the teeth are worn. A sprocket in good condition has even, undamaged teeth.
