The Gates RDM Snubber, supplied with its snubber screw, keeps the Gates belt securely on the sprocket and prevents it from skipping. A skipping belt can damage the inner carbon cords, so a snubber protects the belt.

Why choose this tool?

  • Stops belt skipping. Keeps the belt on the sprocket and prevents tooth jump.
  • Protects the carbon cords. Skipping can damage the inner carbon structure, which can cause damage to the belt while riding.
  • Screw included. Supplied with the snubber screw for the rear derailleur mount.
  • For mud and snow. Gates notes that a snubber can eliminate tooth jump in muddy or snowy conditions.

How is a snubber set up?

A snubber is a component near the rear sprocket that eliminates tooth jump or belt derailment. Gates says it should sit about 1 mm from the back of the belt, cover the full width of the belt and not touch the belt while you ride.

Which snubber part do I need?

The RDM Snubber comes with its screw. If you only need the screw, see the Snubber Screw; for wider installation widths, 142 mm and more, see the Snubber Spacer Kit.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a snubber?

Gates requires snubbers for certain full-suspension applications and says a snubber can also help against tooth jump in mud or snow. Ask us whether your bike needs one.

How far from the belt should it sit?

About 1 mm from the back of the belt, covering the full width of the belt, and it should not touch the belt in operation.

Do I need special tools for a belt drive?

A belt drive needs far less than a chain, but the right tension and alignment matter. Gates offers tools for checking tension, checking alignment, fitting sprockets and protecting the belt – see the table above, and ask us which ones suit your bike.

Why does sprocket alignment matter?

Front and rear sprockets must stay aligned within ±1.0 mm. Misalignment can cause tooth jump, faster wear, noise, belt derailment or belt failure.
