The Gates Strap Wrench is a high-quality tool for removing 9-spline and Bosch sprockets simply and efficiently. Gates recommends its own sprocket wrench, because typical oil-filter strap wrenches are not recommended on sprockets.

Why choose this tool?

  • Made for sprockets. A wrench designed for Gates sprockets, not a general oil-filter wrench.
  • 9-spline and Bosch. For removing 9-spline sprockets and Bosch sprockets.
  • Simple removal. An indispensable aid for simple and efficient removal.
  • Never use the belt. Never use a belt as a strap wrench or chain whip – use this wrench instead.

Why a special wrench?

Gates says its sprocket wrench is made for its sprockets and that typical oil-filter strap wrenches are not recommended. The Gates belt must never be used as a strap wrench or chain whip.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use an oil-filter wrench instead?

Gates does not recommend typical oil-filter strap wrenches for its sprockets; it recommends its own sprocket wrench.

Can I use the belt as a wrench?

Never. Do not use a Gates belt as a strap wrench or chain whip, and do not pry on it.

Do I need special tools for a belt drive?

A belt drive needs far less than a chain, but the right tension and alignment matter. Gates offers tools for checking tension, checking alignment, fitting sprockets and protecting the belt – see the table above, and ask us which ones suit your bike.

What do CDX, CDC and CDN mean?

They are Gates’ three belt-drive lines for bicycles: CDX (top of the range), CDC (mid-range) and CDN (entry level). Gates rates CDX for hub motors and mid-drive e-bike motors up to 120 Nm, CDC for mid-drive motors up to 75 Nm, and CDN for hub-motor e-bikes and casual riding. The tools here work with all Gates Carbon Drive parts.
