The Gates Belt Care Silicone Spray (150 ml) keeps your Gates Carbon Drive running smoothly: it seals and preserves, and forms a durable layer on which water beads off and dirt does not stick easily. Gates recommends a dry silicone spray if the belt squeaks and rinsing with water does not help.

Why choose this tool?

  • Seals and preserves. Forms a durable layer on the drivetrain after application.
  • Water beads off. Water beads off the treated surface and dirt does not stick easily.
  • Against squeaks. Gates suggests a dry silicone spray when the belt squeaks and cleaning with water has not helped.
  • 150 ml. A handy can for your tool bag or workshop.

When should I use it?

First clean the drivetrain with water. If the belt still squeaks, for example in very dry or muddy conditions, apply a dry silicone spray. Never apply oil or grease to a Gates belt.

Care for the belt

The spray is for sealing and preserving, not for lubricating. A Gates belt needs no lubrication: rinse it with water, and use the spray only if noise persists.

Frequently asked questions

Do I lubricate a Gates belt?

No. Never lubricate a Gates belt. The spray is a silicone care product, used only if a squeak persists after rinsing with water.

What should I check if the belt squeaks?

Check alignment and tension, look for worn sprockets or belt, and tighten the sprocket, crank and pedal fittings; clean the drivetrain with water first and use the spray only if the noise persists.

Do I need special tools for a belt drive?

A belt drive needs far less than a chain, but the right tension and alignment matter. Gates offers tools for checking tension, checking alignment, fitting sprockets and protecting the belt – see the table above, and ask us which ones suit your bike.

How do I handle a Gates belt?

Do not twist, back-bend, crimp, invert, bundle or zip-tie the belt, and never use it as a strap wrench or pry it onto the sprockets. Do not lubricate it. Damage to the carbon cords is the most common reason for a belt to fail.
