Gates Tensioner Idler Wheel
The Gates Tensioner Idler Wheel is a replacement idler for a Gates belt tensioner, for when the bearings of the old idler are worn or the belt is no longer guided as well as it should be. It is supplied without nut and bolt.
Why choose this tool?
Replacement idler. Replaces the idler wheel of a Gates belt tensioner.
Fresh bearings. Use it when the bearings of the old idler are worn.
Better belt guidance. Restores optimal guiding of the belt in the tensioner.
Without nut and bolt. The nut and bolt are not included.

When do I need it?
Replace the idler when its bearings are worn or when the belt can no longer be guided as it should. Gates tensioners keep the tension constant, for example on full-suspension frames where the distance to the rear axle changes.

Which Gates tool or part?
The idler is a spare part for a Gates tensioner, not a tool. For checking tension use a tension gauge or meter, and for alignment the belt liners.

Frequently asked questions
Is the nut and bolt included?
No. The idler wheel is supplied without nut and bolt.
Why does a tensioner exist?
On full-suspension bikes the distance between the rear axle and the crank changes, and a belt does not stretch. A spring tensioner keeps the tension constant.
Do I need special tools for a belt drive?
A belt drive needs far less than a chain, but the right tension and alignment matter. Gates offers tools for checking tension, checking alignment, fitting sprockets and protecting the belt – see the table above, and ask us which ones suit your bike.
How tight should the belt be?
Correct tension matters. Too loose and the belt can skip teeth; too tight and it loads the hub bearings. Besides the tools here, the free Gates Carbon Drive app measures tension by sound, and a Gates Krikit gauge (the “CDS Krikit” with the blue plastic) is a physical gauge for riders and shops.
