Rohloff Chain tensioner spring new – for use with existing new type
The Rohloff Chain tensioner spring "new" (Art. 8705) is the replacement torsion spring for Rohloff chain tensioners that already have the modified spring introduced at the end of 2002.

Why a new spring?
Restores chain tension. A tired or broken spring lets the chain slap and can drop it – a new spring brings the tension back.
For the new-type tensioner. Fits tensioners built with the modified spring (since end of 2002).
Simple procedure. The spring sits on the pivot axle under the cage; the Rohloff manual shows the swap step by step.
Keeps the drive quiet. Correct spring tension keeps the chain steady on rough ground.

Old or new type?
Rohloff changed the tensioner spring at the end of 2002. Tensioners built since then take this spring directly.
Older tensioners need the Conversion kit 8248, which adapts them to the improved spring.
Who is it for?
- Riders whose chain slaps or drops. A weak spring is a common cause.
- Long-time SPEEDHUB owners. After many years the spring deserves renewal.
- Workshops. Standard spare for tensioner service.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my tensioner is new-type?
Tensioners built since the end of 2002 have the modified spring. On new-type tensioners the long spring leg rests against a cone washer under a countersunk bolt (Rohloff manual).
Do I need to reuse the safety clip?
Rohloff says not to reuse the safety clip on the pivot axle when the cage is removed.
Is grease needed?
Clean and grease the pivot axle before fitting the new spring.
About Rohloff
Rohloff AG from Fuldatal near Kassel, Germany, builds the SPEEDHUB 500/14: a 14-speed gear hub with evenly spaced gears, a 526% gear range and a sealed oil bath. As robust as the hub is, Rohloff sells small wear and replacement parts individually, so a SPEEDHUB is repaired, not replaced.
BoodaBike (Massive Bikes, Budapest) is an official Rohloff service centre, trained by Rohloff, and an official European distributor of Rohloff hubs and parts. We sell genuine Rohloff parts and we are happy to help you identify the right one for your hub version.
