Rohloff Drain screw
The Rohloff Drain screw (Art. 8205) is the oil drain screw of the SPEEDHUB 500/14 with a fresh seal – the small part you replace at an oil change once the old seal is worn.
Why a new drain screw?
Sealed oil bath. The drain screw closes the oil filling hole; a sound seal keeps the oil in and water out.
3 mm Allen, 0.5 Nm. Tighten gently – Rohloff specifies just 0.5 Nm.
Reusable while sealed. The old screw may be reused as long as its thread sealant is not worn; replace it when it is.
Flush, not deeper. Rohloff warns the drain screw must not go deeper than flush with the hub shell.
Every oil change
Rohloff recommends an oil change once a year or every 5000 km. The drain screw is removed twice during the process – for the cleaning oil and for the fresh oil.
The Rohloff Oil Change Kit already includes one drain screw with new seal.
Who is it for?
- SPEEDHUB owners doing their own oil change. Keep a spare screw with the oil kit.
- Touring riders. A tiny, light spare.
- Anyone with a weeping drain screw. A worn seal is the usual cause.

Can I reuse my old drain screw?
Yes, as long as the thread sealant is not worn. Otherwise fit a new one.
How tight should it be?
Only 0.5 Nm, and never deeper than flush with the hub shell.
My hub weeps a little oil – should I add oil?
No. Rohloff warns against topping up after leaks (risk of overfilling); ride on until the next scheduled oil change.
