Rohloff External gear mech
The Rohloff External Gear Mech (8213) is the complete mechanical shift mechanism for the SPEEDHUB 500/14 – EX transfer box, detachable cable box and fittings – for replacing a damaged gear mech or converting a hub to the current external-gear-mech standard.

Why the external gear mech?
The current Rohloff standard. Rohloff now supplies the internal gear mech only as a spare part; the external gear mech is the standard for mechanical SPEEDHUBs.
Quick wheel removal. The cable box unclips from the transfer box, so the rear wheel comes out without undoing the shift cables.
Normal shift cables. The cables run to the cable box on the frame side – easy to route and to service.
Complete in one box. Transfer box, cable box and fittings as pictured – no hunting for single parts.
Who is it for?
- Riders converting an older hub. For example when moving a hub with internal gear mech into a new frame.
- Owners of a damaged gear mech. After a crash, the complete set is often simpler than replacing parts one by one.
- Frame builders and workshops. For SPEEDHUB builds with mechanical twist-shifter control.

Frequently asked questions
What else do I need for a conversion?
Depending on the frame, a suitable axle plate and torque support, and matching shift cables. Tell us your hub serial number and frame type and we will list the parts.
Is it difficult to fit?
It is precise work: the hub is shifted to gear 14, new gaskets and axle plate screws are fitted and gear 1 must be aligned on the shift shaft. Our Rohloff-trained workshop can do the conversion.
Is it the same as the EX transfer box (8216)?
No. The transfer box is only the hub-side part. This set also includes the cable box and fittings.
