Shimano Alfine 11 SG-S7001-11 Internal Gear Hub – Center Lock, black, 32H
The Shimano Alfine 11 SG-S7001-11 is Shimano's widest-range internal gear hub: eleven gears sealed inside the hub shell, running in an oil bath. For a city, touring or gravel bike with a Gates belt drive it is the most practical gear system we know – no derailleur, no cassette, and you can change gear standing still.

Why the Alfine 11?
11 gears, sealed. Eleven evenly spaced steps with a 409 % range – close to a wide 1×11 cassette – all protected inside the hub shell from mud, salt and rain.
Shift at standstill. Drop to an easy gear while waiting at the lights or before a steep ramp – no pedalling needed.
Belt-drive ready. The gears are inside the hub, so the drivetrain runs in a straight line – exactly what a Gates belt needs, and it also makes a chain last far longer.
Runs in oil. The planetary gearing runs in an oil bath instead of grease, which makes the Alfine 11 feel smoother and shift more lightly than older hubs.
Center Lock disc. Takes standard Shimano Center Lock disc rotors.
E-bike approved. Shimano approves the SG-S7001-11 for e-bike use within its specification.

A drivetrain for every day
The Alfine 11 is a rear hub for bikes that should simply work: commuting through winter, long touring days, loaded bikepacking. Nothing hangs under the chainstay, nothing collects mud, and there is no derailleur to bend or adjust.
Our workshop builds Alfine wheels every week, and we use Shimano internal gear hubs on our own belt-drive bikes.
Who is it for?
- All-season belt-drive riders. A quiet, clean drivetrain that does not mind rain, salt or mud.
- Commuters who stop and start a lot. Change down at the lights without turning the cranks.
- Touring and gravel riders. An occasional oil change instead of weekly derailleur adjustments – with the range for hills and luggage.
- E-bike builders. For builds within Shimano's approved specification.

Service: an oil change, not a rebuild
Shimano specifies the first oil change after 1,000 km, then every 5,000 km or every two years – whichever comes first.
You need one bottle of SG-S700 oil (50 ml) and the TL-S703 oil change kit. Both are in our shop.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the Alfine 11 with a belt drive?
Yes. The hub needs a belt-compatible frame (split or with a belt port) and a Gates sprocket for Shimano 3-lobe hubs, which we stock.
Which shifter does it need?
The SL-S700 Rapidfire Plus shifter. The 8-speed SL-S7000-8 does not work with this hub.
Does it fit my frame?
It needs 135 mm rear spacing and a horizontal dropout, an eccentric bottom bracket or a chain/belt tensioner. Ask us if you are unsure – we build these wheels every week.
Alfine 8 or Alfine 11?
The Alfine 11 has three more gears (409 % range against 307 %) and runs in oil. The Alfine 8 is simpler and cheaper and has no oil change. For hills, luggage and long tours we recommend the 11.
About Shimano
Shimano was founded in 1921 in Sakai, Japan, as a one-man workshop making freewheels. Today it is the world's largest maker of bicycle components, and its standards – Center Lock rotors, Hollowtech cranks, Rapidfire shifters, mineral-oil hydraulic brakes – are what most bikes are built around.
At BoodaBike we use Shimano internal gear hubs and hydraulic brakes on our own belt-drive bikes, and we stock the service parts we use in our own workshop.
