The Shimano SM-BH90 olive + connector insert (Y8JA98020) seals a Shimano BH90 hydraulic hose at the brake lever. Every time the hose is shortened or replaced, the lever end needs a new pair – they are single-use parts.

Brass olive and steel connector insert for Shimano SM-BH90 hydraulic hoses
Y8JA98020: one olive and one connector insert.

Why keep a few in stock?

  • Tight seal. The olive compresses onto the hose and seals it; the insert supports the hose end from inside.
  • Single-use. Once compressed, an olive cannot seal again – a new pair is needed for every hose cut.
  • For BH90 hoses. Fits the SM-BH90 hose family used on Shimano's current disc brakes.
  • Genuine Shimano. Correct size and material for a leak-free connection.

How the connection works

1 – connecting bolt, screws into the brake lever; 2 – olive, compresses onto the hose and seals it; 3 – connector insert, pushed into the hose end; 4 – hydraulic hose.

The olive and the insert are single-use: fit new ones every time the hose is shortened.

Who is it for?

  • Anyone shortening a BH90 hose. For example after fitting new handlebars or a new frame.
  • Workshops. Setting up new bikes and brakes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reuse an old olive?

No. Once compressed, the olive cannot seal again – always use a new one.

How many do I need?

One set per hose end at the lever, i.e. one per brake.

BH90 or BH59 – which do I have?

The hose type is printed on the hose. BH90 parts do not fit BH59 hoses and vice versa.

About Shimano

Shimano was founded in 1921 in Sakai, Japan, as a one-man workshop making freewheels. Today it is the world's largest maker of bicycle components, and its standards – Center Lock rotors, Hollowtech cranks, Rapidfire shifters, mineral-oil hydraulic brakes – are what most bikes are built around.

At BoodaBike we use Shimano internal gear hubs and hydraulic brakes on our own belt-drive bikes, and we stock the service parts we use in our own workshop.
