Gates Carbon Drive CDX Front Sprocket – Pinion - 39T
The Gates Carbon Drive CDX Front Sprocket – Pinion is the standard Pinion sprocket: made of wear-resistant aerospace stainless steel, it mounts directly on Pinion P- and C-line gearboxes and is the choice for mountain biking, adventure, bikepacking and trekking. Gates lists it for the Pinion MGU as well, from 39 teeth. Available in 32 and 39 teeth.
Why choose the CDX Pinion sprocket?
Stainless steel. Aerospace stainless steel, wear-resistant and light for a steel sprocket – the tougher of the two CDX Pinion sprockets.
Direct mount. Fits Pinion P- and C-line gearboxes, and the Pinion MGU motor-gear unit from 39T.
For adventure riding. Gates names mountain biking, adventure, bikepacking and trekking as its home ground.
32 or 39 teeth. Both with 11 mm pitch, for the CDX belt line.

Pinion sprocket: standard or SL?
Gates makes two CDX sprockets for Pinion gearboxes. The standard CDX Pinion sprocket (this one) is made of stainless steel and is the one to choose when durability matters most. The Pinion SL is made of aluminium and saves weight. There is also a black CDX:Black version in chrome-moly steel with a black zinc finish.

Made for hard mountain and adventure riding
The CDX line is the strongest Gates line, rated at up to 4× the life of a chain and for hub motors and mid-drive motors up to 120 Nm. Combine the sprocket with a CDX belt and a CDX rear sprocket for the complete CDX setup.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Pinion and the Pinion SL sprocket?
The standard CDX Pinion sprocket is made of aerospace stainless steel and is the more durable choice. The Pinion SL (Super Light) is made of 6061 aluminium and is lighter; Gates highlights its weight advantage. Choose the standard sprocket for maximum durability and the SL to save weight.
Which Pinion gearbox does it fit?
Gates lists this sprocket for the Pinion P- and C-line gearboxes and for the Pinion MGU motor-gear unit from 39 teeth. Tell us your Pinion model and we will confirm the fit.
Does it come with a guard?
Gates offers the sprocket with or without a guard (trouser guard); the guard version is black. Ask us if you need a version with a guard.
What do CDX, CDC and CDN mean?
They are Gates’ three belt-drive lines for bicycles: CDX (top of the range), CDC (mid-range) and CDN (entry level). Gates rates CDX for hub motors and mid-drive e-bike motors up to 120 Nm, CDC for mid-drive motors up to 75 Nm, and CDN for hub-motor e-bikes and casual riding.
When should I replace a sprocket?
Check your sprockets from time to time. Worn teeth cause noise, tooth jump and faster wear on the belt, so replace the sprocket when the teeth are worn. A sprocket in good condition has even, undamaged teeth.
Sizes and Gates part numbers
Find your sprocket by its tooth count. The Gates article number and type designation are marked on the sprocket, so you can match a replacement exactly.
